Shock diamonds (also known as Mach diamonds or Mach disks) are a formation of shock waves in the exhaust plume of an aerospace propulsion system, such as a supersonic jet engine, rocket, ramjet, or scramjet. It is formed when the supersonic exhaust from a nozzle is slightly over or under-expanded, meaning that the pressure of the gases exiting the nozzle is different from the ambient pressure. A complex flow field results as the shock wave is reflected at the free jet boundary, and the visible diamond-shaped pattern that gives the shock diamond its name, is formed.

A winkle is a rare squeeze/endplay in contract bridge in which a trick is offered to the defenders but whichever wins the trick is then endplayed. Often one defender would be forced to offer a finesse or ruff and discard while the other could overtake and thereby promote a trick in that suit for declarer.

An example end-position, South needing 4 tricks:

On the play of the last spade, West and North let go clubs, and East is squeezed. Pitching a heart yields an immediate trick in that suit, but if a diamond is pitched declarer follows with Ace and 3 of diamonds. If East wins the trick, they must lead hearts conceding the last two tricks there. If West saves partner by playing the king of diamonds on the second diamond trick, they must then concede the last two tricks to dummy’s now high Ace of clubs and Jack of diamonds.

The Moussaieff Red Diamond is a diamond measuring 5.11 carats (1.022 g) with a triangular brilliant cut (sometimes called a trillion or a trilliant cut), rated in color as Fancy Red by the Gemological Institute of America. While this may seem relatively small when compared to other famous diamonds, the Moussaieff Red is, in fact, the largest Fancy Red the GIA reports having rated. The Moussaieff Red is reported to have been found by a Brazilian farmer in the mid-1990s as a rough of approximately 11 carats (2.2 g). The diamond was purchased and cut by the William Goldberg Diamond Corp., where it went by its original name the Red Shield. It is currently owned by Moussaieff Jewelers Ltd.

The Moussaieff Red was displayed as part of the Smithsonian’s “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit, alongside The De Beers Millennium Star and The Heart of Eternity.

Brozel is a method for intervening against an opposing 1NT opening bid. It features the following calls:

Double – shows any single suit; advancer bids 2♣, after which intervenor corrects to his actual suit (or passes with clubs). This was originally played as requiring either a solid suit or a very good suit and an entry, leaving advancer the opportunity to pass with a couple of side-suit stoppers, though many partnerships now allow a weaker suit.

2♣ – shows clubs and hearts

2♦ – shows diamonds and hearts

2♥ – shows hearts and spades

2♠ – shows spades and an unspecified minor suit

2NT – shows clubs and diamonds

The convention is named loosely after its creator, Bernard Zeller.

The Bestwood Welfare Black Diamonds Brass Band, colloquially the Bestwood Black Diamonds (or even the Bestwood Band), is an old and well-known brass band based in the village of Bestwood in the north of Nottingham.

The band was formed in 1947 and was originally known as the Bestwood Black Diamonds Colliery Band; the name ‘Black Diamonds’ comes from the coal that was brought up from the Bestwood Colliery. Apparently when it was washed and broken it glistened like diamonds, and was a very high-quality coal.
The band rehearsed in the old Lamp Cabin, where miners used to leave their pit lamps and tags, but the pit eventually shut around 1967. The band continued to rehearse in the Lamp Cabin, however, until the workshops then closed. The band were offered various rehearsal spaces around Bestwood, notably St Mark’s Church and the Welfare, before they were offered a permanent home within the Community Centre in the village.
Due to their rehearsals in the Welfare, the band added the word “Welfare” to their title. Despite now rehearsing in the Community Centre, the band still has links with the Welfare.

The band originally contested in many brass band competitions, but during the 1990s it began to rapidly decrease in numbers until there were approximately six to eight members remaining. By the early 2000s, however, interest in the band was rebuilt, and - partly due to the students from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University - more players began to come in. As the band’s numbers increased, they invited their former Euphonium player Brian Draper to conduct the band. He remains the conductor to this day.

The band often play concerts in and around Nottingham, occasionally in aid of a charity. In addition, the band has recently started contesting again, competing mostly in entertainment contests, but often playing fourth section test pieces in more official competitions such as the Butlins Mineworkers Championship, and the brass band “Areas”. Although they have not yet come first in anything, the band hope that their increased numbers bode well for the future.
